Regain Strength and Mobility with Expert Care

Hand and wrist injuries can sideline even the most active athletes. Whether you’re into combat sports, contact sports, or any vigorous activities, timely and effective treatment is essential to get you back in action. At Alpha Joints & Orthopaedics, we specialises in diagnosing and treating hand and wrist traumas and fractures, ensuring you receive the best possible care to restore your function and performance.

What Are Hand and Wrist Fractures?

Hand and wrist fractures occur when one or more bones in these areas are broken. This can result from direct impacts, falls, or excessive force commonly experienced in combat and contact sports. Trauma can also include ligament injuries, dislocations, nerve injuries and tendon damage.

Recognising the Symptoms

Understanding the signs of hand and wrist injuries can help you seek timely treatment. Common symptoms include:
  • Intense pain at the injury site
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Difficulty moving the hand or wrist
  • Visible deformity or misalignment
  • Numbness or tingling in the fingers
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek immediate medical attention.

Accurate Diagnosis for Effective Treatment

Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. Using thorough diagnostic techniques, we accurately identify the nature and extent of your injury. These may include:
  • Physical Examination: Assessing the injury and checking for deformities, wounds, tenderness, swelling, and range of motion.
  • Imaging Tests: X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to get detailed views of the bones and soft tissues.
  • Functional Tests: Evaluating the impact of the injury on hand and wrist function.
Treatment plans are tailored to your specific injury and lifestyle, aiming to restore function and get you back to your daily activities as quickly and safely as possible.  Non-Surgical Treatments:
  • Immobilisation: Using casts or splints to keep the bones in place during healing.
  • Medications: To manage pain and reduce inflammation.
  • Physical Therapy: Exercises to restore strength and flexibility.
Surgical Treatments:
  • Fracture Fixation: Using pins, plates, or screws to stabilise and fix broken bones.
  • Ligament and Tendon Repair: Reattaching or reconstructing damaged soft tissues.
  • Arthroscopy: Minimally invasive surgery for certain joint injuries.

Your Path to Recovery

Recovery from hand and wrist injuries involves a combination of rest, rehabilitation, and gradual return to activity. Key aspects include:
  • Rehabilitation: Tailored physical therapy programs to rebuild strength and mobility.
  • Activity Modification: Guidance on safely resuming sports and preventing reinjury.
  • Follow-Up Care: Regular check-ups to monitor healing and progress.
We are committed to supporting you throughout your recovery journey, ensuring you regain optimal function and performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still exercise with a hand or wrist fracture?

It depends on the severity of your fracture and the specific recommendations from our surgeon. Some activities may need to be modified or avoided during recovery to prevent further injury. Physical therapy may be recommended to maintain strength and mobility.

What should I do if I suspect I have a hand or wrist fracture?

If you suspect a hand or wrist fracture, it’s essential to seek medical attention promptly. Avoid moving the injured area, elevate and apply ice to reduce swelling. Immobilise the hand or wrist with a splint or bandage and seek medical attention.

How long does it take to recover from a hand or wrist fracture?

Recovery time varies depending on the severity of the fracture and the specific treatment received. Generally, non-surgical treatments may require a period of immobilisation for a period of 3-6 weeks followed by a period of rehabilitation for another 3-6 weeks. With surgery, we can expect to start progressive rehabilitation within a few days after surgery with a full recovery within 2 to 3 months.

What steps can I take to prevent hand and wrist fractures in the future?

To reduce the risk of hand and wrist fractures, it’s essential to practice safety measures during activities that involve repetitive motions or impact. Wear protective gear such as wrist guards or gloves when participating in sports or activities that pose a risk of injury. Maintaining strong bones through a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D can also support bone health and reduce fracture risk.
